A mesothelioma is an aggressive form of cancer which develops on basically two major parts of the body, this may include the inner lining of the lungs (called pleural mesothelioma) or the abdomen (called peritoneal mesothelioma). The real and major cause of the development of this aggressive kind of cancer is asbestos, which is usually found to exist without any sure shot cure and has a relatively poor prognosis, hence considered to be one of the most dangerous forms of cancer. According to a recent study, doctors have found an approximate number of 3000 cases of mesothelioma reported in the US every year, and this number is truly disheartening on the part of the family and other relatives of the patient.

The common case reported!
The common mesothelioma case reported is the cancer kind that’s found to develop on the inner lining of the lungs, which is the pleural type. This is found to develop as a result of exposures to asbestos more commonly, which the other means of development can also be radiation exposure and SV40 polio vaccine.
How is asbestos responsible?
Largely, mesothelioma, the aggressive form of cancer, is found to develop in individuals who are exposed to asbestos for a large period of time. Asbestos is found to exist largely in the workplace, including, shipyards, industrial settings, old housed, auto repair shops, public buildings, schools, etc, and the development of cancer is found to exist when continuous exposure to asbestos is seen. But this is not the only case, as, in the rarest of the rare cases, even one single time exposure to asbestos has also been found to be the cause of cancer development.
The steps of consumption and developments could be classified in three simples stages mentioned below;
Inhalation of asbestos
Fibre lodging in mesothelial tissue
Fibre resulting in cellular damage, which ultimately gives rise to tumor growth
When asbestos is inhaled by a human body, the same is what being fought with by our body. While our bodies struggle to get rid of microscopic fibers, these get stuck harshly and with time trigger biological changes in our body, which might include genetic damages, inflammation, scarring, and all of this leading to the ultimate permanent damage, that is, cancer.
The latency period is the real reason that leads to the least survival cases in this form of cancer. (latency period is basically the time gap between the bodily exposure to asbestos and the time when the same is diagnosed under expert’s supervision)
Common symptoms to occur
The symptoms found in both pleural mesothelioma and peritoneal mesothelioma are found in a difference with each other. When the symptoms are noticed well, the idea of the cancer development could be made clear, well before the same is diagnosed. Hence we lay down the common symptoms to occur in both the cases, have a look to be aware well in advance;
In pleural mesothelioma;
Shortness of breath,
Consistently persisting cough,
Loss of appetite,
Continuous weight loss without any specific efforts in this direction
High temperatures and sweating
changes in the shape of nails and fingers (found in specific cases, not all)
In peritoneal mesothelioma;
Weight loss without dieting
Continuous pain in abdomen
Constipation or diarrhea
What does the Mesothelioma Prognosis say?
Prognosis is basically the information related to the outcome of the disease, how to know about it and what would be the result based on the stage at which the patient is diagnoses, is all what is supposed to be known for the better understanding of this fatal cancer.
Whom to consider?
To have detailed authentic information about the prognosis, you shall consider a qualified physician. Experts do diagnose the stage and type of cancer which the patient is suffering from, and based on the information gather, the prognosis is laid. The life expectancy and the chances of survival could only be ascertained, after the stage and the type of cancer is known because according to that only, the treatment methods and their effectiveness could be accounted.
Survival (its chances, factors that account, and common cases)
Survival for a mesothelioma patient depends on certain factors which play their major role; these may include the level of fitness of the patient, type of cancer diagnosed, and the availability of treatment for the same. So to judge the life expectancy otherwise, might be a wrong statement to make on the part of the expert.
According to the general statistics;
In localized cases– 35 % of the patients are found to survive for at least 1 year or more than that after the process of diagnosed is done (Note- Localised cases are basically stage 1 in considered cancer)
In Non-localised cases– 5 % of the patients are found to survive for 5 years or more after the process of diagnosis is done. (Note- Non-localized cases are categorized for stage 2, 3 and 4)
Men VS Women
In 1-year survival case, 50 % men are found to survive for 1 year after diagnoses is done, and same is the case with women too.
In 5-year survival case, 5 % men are found to survive for 5 years after diagnoses, while 10 % women are found to survive for 5 years after the process of diagnoses is completed.
Coping with the disease!
When an individual is going through the dire consequences of this aggressive disease, he/she needs a lot of emotional support to cope up with the disease. The patient is continuously going through the feeling of tiredness, confusion, anger, guilt, numbness, and more, which needs to be fought with a lot of support, both emotional and mental. Talk to them, let them get all the encouragement to fight with the consequences, and promote them to be happy by giving them the reasons for the same. This is the only way through which the survival time could be elongated.
